Dry needling is a technique used to treat painful and overactive muscles. We use a very thin, sterile needle that is inserted into the muscle or trigger point to help reduce pain, improve muscle function, and restore normal movement. Unlike acupuncture, the needle is only left in the muscle for a few seconds. Dry needling may be recommended, but will only be performed with your consent.
The first day will consist of a detailed conversation where we discuss your symptoms and your goals. Next I will do a general movement assessment where I look at gait, posture, breathing, etc. This is followed by an examination of the area of concern and might include an external pelvic floor assessment followed by an internal pelvic floor assessment (only with consent).
An internal pelvic floor muscle assessment is not required. Because our pelvic floor muscles are located inside of our pelvis, it is the best way to assess these muscles, evaluate how they are contributing to symptoms, and prescribe exercise. However, this assessment will only be performed with consent. There are situations, including past trauma, where it may be best to wait on this exam or not perform it at all.
